Week 12 Assignment

In this weeks assignment we were instructed to research itunes and how it is used throughout schools around the country. I had a lot of fun viewing all the different articles and study programs that are offered through itunes. I think it is a great way for students to become more involved in their studies as well as take pride in their school! I wish South Alabama would have a program like this!
When I was researching universities that had this program, there were tons. Sanford, Berkley, and other univerites use these educational podcast. Students at these colleges can pretty much look up any topic from their coures or school newspaper to learn more. This is such a great way for students to learn more and have fun with it! Below is just one of the many links I found about itunes in schools!

Week 9 Assignment

After reading and listening to the different sites for this assignment, I was not that shocked. Most people would just assume that internet sources like Wikipedia are reliable, but a lot of times this is not the case! The fact that anybody can get on Wikipedia and change the contents of a certain subject just based on what they think or trying to make others look bad is rediculous. After listening to the NPR episode about this issue, I will definently rethink using Wikipedia for information in the future!

Week 11 Assignment

Every week I am more amazed with all the different technology advances that have been made in recent years. Throughout this course we have researched some of these advancements. One of the newest items on the market is Apple's portable media players. the iPod.
The iPod has been around since 2001 but today there are various versions (ex: ipod mini, ipod touch, ipod shuffle, etc.). As an iPod can transfer music, pictures, and other media items there are also suggestions about iPods. When I was researching, I found different websites that displayed their different suggestions for future iPods. Below is one of these sites.
Many different schools and universities are somehow incorporating iPods into the curriculum. Duke University has taken on this great idea of using iPods in class. By using iPods students at Duke are able to use it as a study support tool and a classroom recording tool. I think it is a great way for students to learn as well as practice new technology!!

Week 10 Assignment

This website was created by Dr. Alice Christie. It has many useful thoughts about what she has experienced as an educator. This website is a "comprehensive resource for educators" who are having problems with new educational technology. This website has so many different things to offer to teachers!
One of the things I found useful for preparing myself for teaching was the main educational technology tab. There were so many great resources I had trouble choosing just one to talk about. The Rubrics link was one I found very useful! It gave me a better understanding of how a rubric should be used in the classroom and of all the great advanages of using them. I truely enjoyed exploring this website and definently found it useful for my future!!

Week 8 Assignment

For this week's blog I choose to read and blog about 'Best of Novemeber'. This blog by Mr. Fisch was titled "Why Wireless?". He was writing for his school newspaper to inform parents and staff of the positive atributes of have a wireless system at their school. He made some very interesting points about the positive effects wirerless internet can have on schools. I enjoyed reading this blog, and I definently agree with Mr. Fisch, I love wireless internet!

He also made many great points in his atricle. One main point that I really liked was when he talked about the world children are growing up in today are way different than the one's of their parents. This blog was mainly about how many great learning experiences can come along with having wireless internet system!

Week 7 Assignment

After reading this blog throughly I totally agree with Mr. Fisch. I think there is a big need for education courses to be more involved with technology. And I will amitt, I myself do not know as much as I should about computers. Technolgy is not going to go away, it will only progress throughout time so I find it very important to incorporate technology in education!
I really liked how Mr. Fisch outlined the importance of not just teachers being held responsible for their lack of knowledge when it comes to technology, but also administrators, professors, and even parents. Today students need to have teachers who understand and know exactly how to work computers. In a lot of my classes most of my teachers/professors have not been able to work different technology eqiupment and a lot of times the students have suffered from this! I really enjoyed viewing this blog and think every teacher should read it as well!

Week 6 Assignment

chalkboard symbol of the International Schools Association

This blog site it the main headquarters for the international schools association. It was interesting to read about the different opportunities students have at international schools. I am a strong believe in educating children on others' cultures, not just their own. And I also think by having international schools this can be achieved. On this site there were other links to international schools which could be very useful if somebody was trying to find the right school for their child! It seemed like a great way for parents to get an inside view of the schools!

Example of classroom at the Shu Ren International School
I thought this was a neat blog! It is the Shu Ren International school that is located in many different areas in the world. They teach Mandarian and English immersion for grades preschool through 8th grade. I thought it was very interesting to learn how they start educating children at the age of about 4 with various cultures. I enjoyed researching this blog and going through all the interesting pictures of what this school has to offer!

Week 5 Assignment

This is a great blog to view It was designed by a math teacher who talks a lot about different approaches to take when dealing with those hard math subjects. She discusses the different ways she has found over the years that work better than others. Math can be a very challenging subject for students as well as teachers, so it was great to learn about the different resources there are out there in the world for teachers. I would highly recommend this blog to other future teachers!

This really enjoyed this site! This is a retired teacher's blog who now is a substitute teacher and loves it! She had many entertaining topics and experiences to share with blogger's. I have never substitued before but I have heard horror stories from people who have. On this site, she gives great tips and stratagies for substitues. Also on this site there are many other links to more teacher blogs. I had no idea just how many teachers actually blog about their jobs!

Week 4 Assignment

As I look back on my years of schooling, I can remember the different tecnology advancments from year to year. In first grade the extent to my computer activity was getting to play word munchers with my fellow classmates. Now being a junior at college everything involves working with a computer. Grades, notifcations, and even payments are all done through the internet.
I throughly enjoyed watching the 'Did You Know' video. I thought it was great how they incorporated all the interesting facts and statistics about computer advancements that will only broaden with time. Something neat to me is that by 2049 the average computer will not only be able to exceed one human mind, but all of the human race!
Something I got out of watching this video was how important it is to provide children with opportunities. Today some children in third world countries have never even held a textbook! With the internet students are able to explore the world!
Parents should be asking their, principles, schoool board members and even state representatives if they are providing students with the latest advancements of literacy in the 21st century. To me, the main point of this video was that computers will only advance with time and continue to bring positive opportunities to people!

ACCESS: Week 3 Assignment

In education today many students become discouraged, especially in high school. The state of Alabama has come up with a great way for high school students to be successful and achieve their goals. This program is called ACCESS, which stands for Alabama Connecting Classroom, Educators, and Students Statewide.
Many people today are wondering what exactly ACCESS is, as was I at the begining of this assignment. Governor Bob Riley initiated ACCESS to help students become more motivated about thier own education. ACCESS is an education initiative of Alabama Department of Education. It provides Alabama high school students with opportunities that they may not have access to. The ACCESS website has many useful resources and information videos for parents, students, and educators. The objectives of the ACCESS program are to provide advanced placement and dual enrollment to students. As well as promoting E-Learning experiences for all Alabama high school students and their teachers.
ACCESS is a great program that willl only help strengthen Alabama's educational programs. With ACCESS, students will become independent learners, effective communicators, and will grow into mature, responsible students. ACCESS is going to take off throughout our state and I look forward to partaking in this program once I become an Alabama certified teacher!!

ALEX: Week 2 Assignment

Anybody in the education field knows how hard it can be. From having to write you daily lesson plans to making sure you cover the required course standards it can be overwhelming at times. There are many great websites for educators today, but there is one that truly surpasses them all!

The Alabama Department of Education has designed and programed an awesome website for teachers, as well as students and thier parents. The offical site is http://alex.state.al.us, but it is commonly known as ALEX. This site is a great way for anybody to learn more about the educational programs and policies provided by the state of Alabama.

ALEX is so easy anybody can use it and be successful! The website is designed in eight different categories: Course of Study, Web Links, Lesson Plans, Professional Learning, Personal Workspace, Distant Learning, Search, and Help. The Course of Study index has all of Alabama's required standards for every grade level and subject. Web Links has tons of great websites for teachers, administrators, and students. The Lesson Plan index is a place where one can look up a lesson plan or create their own. Professional Learning index has support and advice groups available for educators. Distance Learning is an index for information about the ACCESS programs. Personal Workspace is great because teachers can create an account and have their own profile. As you can see this website is filled with educational provisions!

As a student majoring in education, I have already used ALEX many times. It is reassuring to know that when I do become a teacher I will be able to accomplish so much more with the help of this website!!

All About Me

Welcome to my blog! My name is Jilli Wilcoxon and I am 21 years old. I live in Fairhope, Alabama with my wonderful husband, Andy, and our 8 month old baby boy named Wright.

I was born and raised in Fairhope, so I guess you could say I am a small town girl! I graduated from Fairhope High School in 2006. I attended The University of Alabama my freshmen year. I am a junior at University of South Alabama where my major is Elementary Education. I am taking all night classes this semester at South and I hope I will be able to juggle school and spending time with my family. I cannot wait to be out of school and in the classroom teaching! I have always wanted to be a teacher, and love working with young kids!

I enjoy spending time with my family and taking walks on the bay. I also have a black lab named Bo. I am very close with my family, as they all live in Fairhope too. I am the middle child and have an older and younger brother.

I have only taken a few education courses but I have enjoyed all of them. I hope you all enjoyed reading a little bit about me!!
